Feeling My Feelings Body Outline

A practical tool for developing emotional literacy and describing feelings.

This resource helps individuals to understand that we physically ‘feel our feelings’ in our bodies. Through reflective discussion and questioning, we can support children, young people, and adults to link emotions with sensations, and to describe them using words, colours, pictures, and actions.

 

Key questions to ask might be:

  • How do you feel?
  • Does that feeling have a name?
  • Where do you feel it in your body?
  • What do you think causes this feeling?
  • What does it feel like?
  • Which words would you use to describe it?
  • What colour is this feeling?
  • What do you say /do / think when you feel like this?
  • What can you do?

 

The Emotion Name Cards can be used to support the development of emotional literacy and communication, and facilitate the use of precise, nuanced language.

 

Individuals could:

  • Fill in the thought bubbles and speech bubbles
  • Draw pictures to represent the emotion, inside and outside their body
  • Use a simple colour code for different emotions e.g. blue = calm
  • Use the magnifying glass version to ‘zoom in’ on specific areas of the body
