Writing an Effective Behaviour Policy

Every school should have a clear and comprehensive behaviour policy that details their approach to behaviour support. This policy is central to creating a positive behaviour culture and should clarify expectations around areas such as school rules, roles and responsibilities, rewards and sanctions, and behaviour support strategies.

The behaviour policy should be co-created by staff members and tailored to the unique needs of the school. It should be shared with anyone involved with students, including leaders, teachers, support staff, volunteers, and governors. It should also be easily accessible for all parents and carers.

An effective behaviour policy:

• • Clarifies agreed behaviour support strategies

• • Provides practical guidance around roles and responsibilities

• • Is regularly reviewed and updated to ensure best practice
