8 Demand-Reducing Strategies

A practical guide to supporting children with demand-avoidant behaviours.

For some children, everyday requests that seem small to us can feel like a demand to them. This can cause feelings of anxiety and overwhelm, which can sometimes lead to behaviour that needs our support.

The feeling of panic caused by perceived demands can sometimes be so significant that it affects everyday life for some children. This is often referred to as Pathological Demand Avoidance, or PDA, by some professionals.

Children affected are often referred to as having a ‘demand-avoidant profile’. While there is still further research to be done around PDA and it is not possible to receive a formal diagnosis, many parents and carers need help and guidance to support their child with demand-avoidant behaviours.

This downloadable guide provides 8 practical demand-reducing strategies to use with children and is a useful resource for parents, carers, and professionals.
