Biting Behaviour Recording Template

An editable template to record information about an individual’s biting behaviour.

Biting is a common behaviour, particularly amongst young children. There can be a whole range of underlying factors, including relieving pain, seeking sensory input, communicating a need, or expressing an emotion. Our job as practitioners is to identify what that need is, and offer safer, alternative strategies.

Use this editable recording template to help you understand why an individual may engage in biting behaviour, look for patterns, and identify steps you can take to reduce risk for all. Once complete, consider who needs to have access to this information.

Key questions to consider are:

    • What are the triggers for this behaviour?

    • What is this individual trying to communicate?

    • What could you do to reduce risk for all?
