Understanding Behaviour Poster

Questions for practitioners to ask themselves, to better understand and support behaviour.

As committed, caring practitioners, we always want to offer the best, most effective behaviour support. When we witness behaviour that needs support, it can be tempting to rush in and intervene straightaway.

However, if it is safe and appropriate to do so, we can take time to ask ourselves some questions before we respond. These questions can help us better understand and support the behaviour we are seeing, and can guide our decision-making.

Questions can include:

    • How am I feeling?

    • Am I the right person to respond?

    • Has this happened before?

    • What is this behaviour communicating?

    • What may have triggered this?

This downloadable poster outlines the types of questions that we can ask ourselves as professionals, and serves as a handy reminder when we need to support individuals’ behaviour.
