Verbal Aggression in Aged Care

Guide to responding to verbal aggression in aged care.

As caring professionals, we are committed to always offering the best support to those in our care. Working with and supporting older adults can be hugely rewarding but is not without its challenges.

Sometimes, older adults can communicate in ways that may seem verbally aggressive or abusive. This can include swearing, shouting, screaming, criticising, and making personal comments or threats.

This guide explores some of the reasons for verbal abuse or aggression, and suggests different ways to respond to those in our care, in order to maintain strong relationships and minimise the likelihood of escalation.
