Supporting Individuals with Dementia

How practitioners can support those with cognitive challenges around dementia.

Caring for individuals with dementia is enormously rewarding, but can also bring moments of uncertainty and worry when behaviour changes in ways that feel unfamiliar or difficult for us to interpret.

By understanding the condition more fully, we are better able to respond to dementia-related behaviour with empathy, confidence and clarity.

What is dementia?

Dementia is not a single condition, but an umbrella term used to describe a group of progressive neurological disorders that affect memory, thinking, communication and everyday functioning.

The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, but there are others, including vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia. Each affects the brain differently, which means experiences and behaviours can vary widely from person to person.

However, what these conditions have in common is an impact on how the brain processes information. Over time, individuals may find it harder to make sense of their surroundings, interpret situations, or communicate their needs. As cognitive capacity declines, behaviour often becomes a primary way of expressing distress, confusion, or unmet needs.

From behaviour to meaning

Often, dementia-related behaviour relates to neurological changes that can affect perception, communication, or emotional regulation. For example:

  • Memory loss can make environments feel unfamiliar, even when they are long-standing homes or care settings. This can lead to anxiety, withdrawal, or attempts to leave.
  • Changes in language processing may make it harder for individuals to understand instructions, which can result in frustration or apparent non-compliance.
