Downloads New to Teaching: Communication
Good communication is at the heart of all effective practice. The way we interact with others allows us to make connections, build relationships, and foster positive, supportive environments for all.
As humans, we communicate in a variety of ways, using a combination of verbal and non-verbal cues. We decide on the best communication strategies based on the needs of the audience and the message being conveyed.
As teachers, we interact with a range of different people on a daily basis: students, colleagues, and parents / carers, each of whom may benefit from a different approach. Only when we ‘tune into’ another person’s communication style can we make the best decisions about the support we offer.
This book is split into 5 chapters, each looking at a range of ways to communicate with different people. It is designed to help you think about effective communication and its impact on behaviour support and relationships, as you embark on your teaching career.
At the end of each section, you’ll find key reminders, questions, and tasks to prompt self-reflection and further develop your professional practice.
By the end of this book, you will have a better understanding of how to communicate effectively and be equipped with a toolkit of practical strategies to try in your own classroom.
