Practical Ways to Reduce Restraint: Part 1

Part 1 of a three-part series exploring how we can reduce the use of restraint in our settings.

As services grow and develop, the complexity of the individuals they offer a service to may also expand, resulting in potentially more risks for all. Restrictive interventions, including restraint, may be one answer, but they are by no means the only answer.

Within the supportive environments in which we work, it is essential that we consider the types of restraint and restriction we might use, but also that we can demonstrate ways in which we are attempting to eliminate, or at least reduce, their use.

This eBook is Part 1 of a three-part series. Each chapter offers a practical activity and reflection points to support your service in reducing the use of restraint, and to help you develop a restraint-reduction mindset.

In Part 1, we explore:

    • What we mean by ‘restraint’

    • The legal & professional framework around restraint
