Setting Up a Calm Room or Quiet Space Guide

Key considerations for establishing a calm room or quiet space within your setting.

Calm room, quiet space, reflection area, emotional wellbeing zone – whatever you choose to call it in your setting, the purpose of these environments is the same:  to provide access to a designated quiet, calm space where individuals can recover and feel safe when they are distressed, overwhelmed or dysregulated.

How these spaces look will vary from setting to setting, depending on the needs of individuals and the limitations of the building. However, there are some elements that are common to most, if not all, calm spaces and quiet rooms.

Use our downloadable guide to support the setting up of your own calm room / quiet space. It covers areas such as:

    • The purpose of a calm room / quiet space

    • Points to consider before starting

    • Suggested resources and activities

    • A list of do’s and don’ts
